NOVEMBER 9, 2009
A. Advocating Effectively for Your Child
Presented by Myrna Silverstein, Ph.D.

This workshop will focus on familiarization with key terms for school services, identifying the guidelines of 504 plans and I.E.P.’s, and how to prepare for effective school meetings to get the right services for your child. You’ll go home with a packet of helpful information, resources and reference tools.

For families who think they may need additional educational services, those who need to implement an I.E.P. or 504, and those who are already within this process.

B. Making the Grade: Successful Study &
Organizational Skills
Presented by Rebecca Ladd, M.A., Reading Specialist

Bring your child with his or her backpack, and learn how to organize at home for school success with hands-on demonstrations and solutions, from organizing the backpack to optimizing homework space. Find out how to support the system your child’s teacher has put in place by creating a consistent, complementary system at home. Discover how to transfer organizational responsibility to your child effectively. Buy organizational materials discussed, right on-site.

For parents and their children to attend together (workshop fee applies to adults only); this workshop is intended for school-aged children with regular homework, but is geared most specifically toward middle and high school levels.

C. Supporting Your Struggling Reader

Presented by Jonathan Green, M.Ed.,
Director of The Hamilton School at Wheeler

How do you know if your child has a reading problem? What can you do at home to help your child? How do you decide what kind of support your child needs? What kinds of resources are available to you beyond the school year? Find out the answers to these questions and more.

After this initial session, for those who are interested, hear about a summer program for struggling readers, with the opportunity to meet the Site Director and some of the faculty.

For parents and teachers of children who are struggling to read in the elementary and middle school grades.

Rhode Island Tutorial & Educational Services was established over a decade ago to help students with various learning styles realize their academic potential. RITES has helped hundreds of students develop the skills for success both in their classrooms and at home by offering one-on-one tutoring, small-group instruction, summer programs, assessment services, and advocacy support to the Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts communities. The RITES staff understands that the “one size fits all” approach to instruction just doesn’t work, so RITES teachers develop personalized plans of instruction based on each student’s learning needs. For more information, visit www.ritutorial.org.
